A heroic rescue…

Video footage from YouTuber Markus Sadboy has emerged of the incredibly tense moment that a heroic firefighter jumped from the Sarsfield Bridge into the River Shannon to help rescue a woman who had entered the water earlier.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday 1 March, saw the involvement of the Shannon-based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 115 as well as members of the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service,  one of whom, Eli Brace, bravely jumped in to save the drowning woman.

During the footage you can see a member of the helicopter crew attempt to reach the woman but, due to high winds, they are unable to do so. Fire Officer Brace then leaps from the bridge at around the 1.31 mark and thankfully, with the help of another rescuer in a boat, the pair manage to pull the woman to safety.

According to an updated story in the Limerick Leader, “the woman, who is understood to be from the Garryowen area, did not suffer serious injury and is recovering.”

Massive congratulations to all involved for successfully pulling off such a daring and dangerous rescue.
