Want to see people attempt to fly off Dun Laoghaire pier? Step this way

It’s back.

After a six-year absence, Red Bull Flugtag is making a welcome return to Ireland. Fans of the madcap event will be in for a treat when it comes to Dun Laoghaire on Sunday, 20 May.

For anyone unfamiliar with Red Bull Flugtag, it involves teams of five people building their own flying machine. Once they’ve mastered the art of aero engineering and constructed their own flying contraption, they’ll test it out by hurling it off a nine-metre ramp over water in front of thousands of people.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, there is that…

People making eejits of themselves for your entertainment? There could be a flaw but we can’t see it.

The teams will test their plane-building skills by pushing their “planes” off Dun Laoghaire pier in an effort to go as far as they can. Whether their creations soar majestically through the air or plummet into the waters beneath, it promises to be great craic to watch.

The current world record is an unbelievable 78.5metres, which will take some beating. Who knows – you could witness a bit of history if the record is broken on these shores.

There’s still time to sign up if you and your mates fancy yourselves as modern-day Wright Brothers. Or you can just turn up on the day and laugh at everyone else’s efforts. We know which one we’ll be doing!
