Warning issued as measles outbreak confirmed in Kerry

Parents have been warned not to bring children to Kerry University Hospital unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The HSE are investigating at least 19 cases of measles across the country, predominantly in Kerry. 13 cases have been confirmed, with another six expected to be confirmed soon.

The HSE have also said they believe a large portion are unaware that they had come into contact with the measles virus.

According to Newstalk, these are the places that those infected with measles have been in the last few months: Dublin, Dublin Aiport, Tralee, Dingle, West Limerick, and a May 16 flight from Zadar to Dublin.

Dr Kevin Kelleher has said “the time between exposure to the virus and developing measles rash is normally 14 days.  People are infectious from 4 days before rash starts until 4 days after.”

Symptoms include include high fever, coughing, a runny nose, and a red rash that starts on the head and spreads downwards.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms is encouraged to address them rapidly.
