Footage has emerged of extreme flooding in Laois, where two housing estates have had to be evacuated.

According to RTÉ, 43 homes in the Mountmellick area of Co. Laois have had to be evacuated after the nearby Owenass River burst its banks. Parts of Ireland saw 50mm of rain fall over several hours throughout the day, and streets in many counties, including Laois, Dublin and Kildare were flooded.

Laois Fire and Rescue have also shared several photos on their Twitter page, showing severe flooding throughout the county. They also confirmed that as early as this morning, they had received 16 flooding calls.

One Laois school required a makeshift bridge in order to help children safely evacuate.
