We may not have had a white Christmas, but a white January is certainly on the horizon.

Met Éireann have issued a weather advisory for several counties this weekend, as snow and sleet are set to disrupt travel and services.

An update on the meteorological service's website states: "Sleet and snow in places this weekend, with some disruption possible.

"A spell of rain will spread northwards over Ireland during the course of Saturday, turning to sleet and snow in some areas. Rain, sleet and snow will continue for a time on Sunday before clearing eastwards into the Irish Sea.

They added: "Significant accumulations of snow are likely in some counties."

Potential impacts include hazardous travelling conditions and travel & service disruption.

The advisory is effective from 12am Saturday until 12am on Monday.

Met Eireann have also issued a status yellow low temperature and ice warning for the whole of Ireland, effective from later today.

The warning kicks in at 6pm this evening - and will last until 11am tomorrow. Forecasters are predicting widespread frost and ice with temperatures plummeting to -3C or even lower in many areas nationwide.

Friday will be a very frosty one, with a few isolated fog patches possible. Highest temperatures of just 3 to 5 degrees are expected tomorrow so wrap up well if you're out and about.
