The weather for the coming week could be worse

Carl Kinsella

Weather this week

It’s not exactly perfect but it will do.

Ireland is currently drifting further and further away from the halcyon days of summer and closer to the time of year that Hurricane Ophelia hit in 2017.

As such, we can expect to see much lower temperatures, much stronger winds and, of course, more rain than we know what to do with.

Met Éireann’s forecast for the coming week, however, isn’t all that bad. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not great. It just could be worse. Monday will see temperature highs of 15 to 18 degrees and Tuesday will be similar with maximums of 14 to 17 degrees.

According to Met Éireann: “Tuesday night: Outbreaks of rain will make a return to parts of Munster, Leinster and Connacht on Tuesday evening and night, before clearing southwards again overnight. A mix of clear spells and scattered showers elsewhere. Winds mainly light west to southwest, but continuing fresh along Ulster coasts. Cool with minimum temperatures ranging 7 to 10 degrees.

Wednesday: Mostly dry and bright on Wednesday with variable cloud amounts and sunny spells, but there will be a few scattered light showers around. Rather cool, with highs ranging 13 to 17 degrees in light to moderate westerly winds, coolest in the northwest.

“Most places will be dry at first on Wednesday night with clear spells but increasing cloud over northern and western areas will bring showery outbreaks of rain into parts of Connacht and west Ulster overnight. Winds backing southwesterly on Wednesday night and strengthening near west and north coasts. A chilly night, especially further south where skies will remain mostly clear, with lows of 6 to 9 degrees.

Thursday: Continuing cool on Thursday with variable cloud amounts, sunny spells and occasional showers. The showers will affect mainly western and northwestern counties at first, but will gradually become more widespread through the afternoon as light to moderate and occasionally gusty southwesterly winds veer moderate to fresh westerly. Maximum temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Friday: Current indications for Friday suggest mainly dull and damp conditions with outbreaks of rain affecting much of the country, with a clearance to showers developing later in the day. Cool with maximums in the mid-teens at best, in light to moderate southwest winds.”
