Wintry showers and sub-zero temperatures forecast ahead of bitterly cold weekend

Hot water bottles at the ready.

The weather in Ireland over the Christmas and New Year period was unseasonably mild, so it was only a matter of time before we were met with conditions more typical for this time of year.

Those conditions look set to arrive over the coming days, with Met Éireann flagging the potential for wintry showers and temperatures dropping as low as -4 degrees between now and Monday night.

After a breezy day on Friday, temperatures will drop to between zero and three degrees on Friday night ahead of a brisk day on Saturday, when temperatures won’t exceed single figures and there will be plenty of clear spells.

Sunday will be pretty similar until it begins to turn very cold on Sunday night, when lowest temperatures will fall to between zero and -4 degrees with a widespread sharp frost across the country.

That cold snap will be slow to clear on Monday, when scattered showers will potentially become heavy and wintry, especially in the west and north of the country. Lowest temperatures will again hover between -2 and just above freezing, while the early forecast for the middle of next week is for more cold conditions and the possibility of more wintry showers in places.

Could this be the start of the conditions that brought the country to a standstill last year, as has been flagged by weather forecasters in recent weeks?
