The weather looks alright for the foreseeable, not that it matters much

Dave Hanratty

Weekend weather lockdown

Sunshine, cold spells and staying indoors anyway.

That’s pretty much the summary for a weekend in which we have all been kindly asked by the government to only leave the house in the event of highly-specific essential circumstances.

The message is clear – stay inside where possible and adhere to the latest measures issued on Friday night.

As for the weather during all of this? Well, it’s weather. It doesn’t really have much of an opinion on these matters and thus carries on regardless.

The forecast from Met Éireann is a familiar one for anyone who’s powered through a normal end-of-March situation, with a generally dry day on the horizon for Saturday (28 March) with good spells of sunshine throughout.

It’ll be brisk enough, though, with a northeast breeze making its presence known in coastal areas. Highest temperatures on Saturday are expected to be between 8 to 10 degrees in the north and east, while a little milder in the south and west with highs of 10 to 13 degrees.

Saturday night looks like a cold and dry affair with temperatures generally dropping to -2 to zero degrees, bringing some patchy frost for company. It’ll be cloudier further south with lows of zero to +2 degrees.

Sunday, meanwhile, brings “good spells of sunshine for much of the country”. Get in! No, seriously, get inside, stay there and gaze longingly out the window.

Met Éireann notes that it will be quite cold for this time of year with highs of just 5 to 7 degrees in Ulster and east Leinster along with 7 to 9 degrees elsewhere in the country so hopefully that’ll help you stay put.

By the time night falls on Sunday, things will be dry, clear and frosty. Lows of -2 to +2 degrees are forecast with Munster and Leinster expected to be the coldest areas. Clouds are set to increase in the north later in the night.

As for next week? Monday brings words like “cold”, “frosty” and “mostly sunny to begin” so it seems like more of the same. Throw in clouds and the risk of some light showers and yep, you’ve got yourself a Monday right there.

Highs of 8 to 10 degrees and a less cold night – lows of 1 to 3 degrees – make up for it.

Tuesday should be “largely dry but mostly cloudy” as March draws to a strange close. Once again, highs of 8 to 10 degrees are forecast along with some patchy light rain on north and northwest coasts. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees.

Heading into Wednesday and a brand new month, things look similar enough to what came before though a touch warmer with highs of 9 to 11 degrees. Early indications for Thursday and Friday appear settled, cloudy and dry enough.

Again, not that any of this really matters. Stay safe, act accordingly.
