Man dies, woman seriously injured in a road accident in Westmeath

Very sad news.

A 27-year-old man has died and an 18-year-old woman has been seriously injured following a road accident in Westmeath on Wednesday night.

Gardaí are investigating a single vehicle collision on the Castlepollard to Collinstown Rd in Mullingar, which occurred between 10pm and 11.20pm on Wednesday.

A car hit a ditch and ended up in a field with the man being pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to Mullingar regional hospital.

Her condition is described as serious.

The road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place.
