Finders keepers… and keepers get arrested, apparently.

A 23-year-old woman was brought to court over a £20 pound note she found on the floor of a her local store in Blurton, England.

When another customer reported having lost the note in the store having used the ATM there, the staff checked the CCTV camera and recognised the regular customer who had picked up the money.

According to the Stoke Sentinel, the police were called and the woman plead guilty to theft once she was shown the CCTV footage.

She was fined £175 in court costs and charges, and was dealt a six-month conditional discharge, meaning she will face no punishment if she remains out of trouble for the next six months.

Chief Inspector Karen Stevenson of the Stoke South Local Policing Team said: “Morally, the right thing to do is hand in any found property so that the person who has lost out has every opportunity to be reunited with it. This was someone’s hard-earned money and we are committed to supporting all victims in our community.”
