A woman in her 40s is being treated at University Hospital Kerry after sustaining serious injuries following a pony and trap accident in the Gap of Dunloe.
The accident happened around lunchtime on Wednesday afternoon when the woman was travelling as a passenger in the horse-drawn carriage.
An investigation into the incident has been launched by gardaí but no other injuries were reported.
The Gap of Dunloe is a popular hotspot for American tourists visiting Kerry, as it's known for its stunning views and mythical atmosphere.
The pass is forged between the MacGillycuddy Reeks and Purple Mountain and a road winds through the pass and descends into The Black Valley passing five lakes, Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough.
In the centre of it all is a picturesque old bridge known as the 'Wishing Bridge'.
You can hire a jaunting car (horse-drawn wagon) to travel through the Pass and take a boat back to Killarney from Lord Brandon's cottage at the other end.
According to Radio Kerry, the woman's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this time.
In 2018 two American tourists were killed in a freak accident during a pony and trap trip at the Gap of Dunloe.
Rosalyn Joy Few (64) and Normand Larose (62), died on only the second day of their Irish holiday, after the pony slipped, resulting in the animal, the trap and the tourists being catapulted into a ravine at the famous tourist location, their inquest heard.
