The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.
A woman in her 50s was attacked with a metal mug during an aggravated burglary in her home in Mahon, Cork on Monday.
In the early hours of the morning, a man broke into the house and when he was discovered by the homeowner, he proceeded to assault the woman using what has been described as a “metal travel mug”.
The male fled the scene when he was disturbed by another member of the household.
The woman received injuries to her head and no property was taken from the premises.
Gardaí have arrested a man in his late 20s in relation to the burglary.
The man in question was taken to Bridewell Garda Station, Cork where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Investigations are ongoing.
