You could be in a lot of trouble if you didn’t do your Census forms

Carl Kinsella

Did you do the Census this year?

If not, you could be about to run foul of the Central Statistics Office – and the courts. The CSO released the preliminary results of April’s Census this week, but if you failed to provide them with your info then you’re in breach of the law.

Reports from before April 24th suggested that failure to provide the CSO with your info through the Census could result in fines of up to €44,000.

Historically, very few people are prosecuted for not completing the Census – but there were a handful of cases before the courts in both 2006 and 2011, according to The Journal.

However, the fines weren’t quite so high as the figure above – with the guilty parties only being forced to pay a few hundred euro.

A JOE.ie article from 2012 highlights how six people ended up in big trouble after failing to fill out their 2011 Census.
