Boris Johnson has reached new levels of irony with his latest take on a possible Irish border deal

Brexit

How has this man gotten anywhere in politics?

Following a leaked report that EU and UK negotiators had agreed a deal for a backstop that would see the UK temporarily come to a customs arrangement with the EU, Boris Johnson has flown off the handle.

Posting on his official Twitter page, the former Foreign Secretary slammed Theresa May’s handling of Brexit once again.

“No one is fooled by this theatre. Delay after staged managed delay. A deal will be reached and it will mean surrender by the UK. We will be doomed to remain in the customs union and under Brussels’ regulatory control. People did not vote for colony status.

“We still have time to go for something better – a SuperCanada free trade deal that will allow the UK to benefit from brexit and actually respect the referendum. The future can be bright if only we change course now”

Of course, the irony does not solely lie in Johnson’s nonsensical idea that the United Kingdom could be relegated to a colony of the EU — a horrific turn of phrase given Britain’s long history of brutal colonisation.

It also lies in the fact that Johnson “We still have time to go for something better – a SuperCanada free trade deal that will allow the UK to benefit from brexit and actually respect the referendum” — while ignoring that Johnson himself was Foreign Secretary for two whole years after Brexit and did nothing whatsoever to advance this possibility (because it’s not a possibility).
