“I have had to make a choice between seeking re-election or keeping my promise to my local community.”
Independent TD Dr. Michael Harty has announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming general election, as he can no longer find a locum GP to cover his role in the community.
Harty was first elected to the Dáil by the Clare constituency in the 2016 election.
In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, Harty said: “As a leader of the No Doctor No Village campaign, I committed to maintain general practice services in Kilmihil by putting in place a locum GP, while taking my seat as an Independent TD to fulfil all the responsibilities and duties associated with that position both nationally and locally.
“Finding a full-time locum GP has proved increasingly difficult over the years.”
Harty said it was no longer possible to fulfil both of commitments, saying: “I have had to make a choice between seeking re-election or keeping my promise to my local community. I have chosen the latter.”
While no date has been announced for a general election as of yet, it is expected that one will be announced later this week.
