Are we heading towards the Brexit finish line?

President of the European Council Donald Tusk has announced that he has sent a draft of a final Brexit agreement to the 27 EU countries involved in Brexit negotiations for approval.

In a statement on his official Twitter page, Tusk wrote: “I have just sent to EU27 a draft Political Declaration on the Future Relationship between EU and UK. The Commission President has informed me that it has been agreed at negotiators’ level and agreed in principle at political level, subject to the endorsement of the Leaders.”

The announcement follows a midweek meeting by UK Prime Minister Theresa May and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

There will be an EU summit on Sunday with a view to achieving approval from all 27 EU nations before the deal goes before Westminster.

The deal was savaged by MPs in the UK Parliament last week, with those from inside May’s own party — as well as opposition from Labour and the Scottish National Party — saying that they would not vote for the deal. The DUP, which currently props up May’s Tory government, have also voiced strong opposition to the deal.

As things stand, it is not believed that there is sufficient political support for the deal throughout the House of Commons.
