“I know how great a community we have, and how great a nation we have.”
Green Party Chairperson Hazel Chu has been Lord Mayor of Dublin for over a month now, a period she describes as “surreal”.
In this long-form interview with JOE, the topics range from the very serious issues facing Ireland; racism, a rise in far-right rhetoric, sexism in politics, to the importance of memes in her own election and in young people’s awareness and engagement in Irish politics.
Chu also speaks openly on the future of the Green Party in Ireland after a divisive decision to enter into a coalition government with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the loss of young activists and the sacrifices the Greens have to make to get the results they want.
