Sinn Féin weren’t his only target.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he’d sooner bring back the wolves than allow Sinn Féin into government.

Varadkar was speaking at the Fine Gael presidential dinner on Saturday night when he made the comment.

The Fine Gael leader used the speech as platform to launch attacks on some of his political rivals, beginning with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

“Meanwhile during the week, the leader of the Green Party, Eamon Ryan, announced his great plan on Twitter to repopulate rural Ireland with wolves.” Varadkar said.

“I would have thought the Greens’ experience of being in government with Fianna Fáil would have warned them off dangerous predators.”

The Taoiseach continued to switch to Sinn Féin who he said are using Britain’s woes as their opportunity.

“And then there’s Sinn Féin,” he said. “Sinn Féin approach Brexit the same way they approach all political issues. They see Britain’s difficulty as Sinn Féin’s opportunity.

“They don’t seem to mind that Britain’s difficulty is Northern Ireland’s difficulty and ours as well.

“Decisions are made by those who turn up. Sinn Féin doesn’t – either to the House of Commons or Stormont.

“And, I’d sooner bring back the wolves then let Sinn Féin into Government.”

Eamon Ryan said this week that the reintroduction of wolves into Ireland would create a real sense of wilderness and help develop more resilient woodlands.

However, Josepha Madigan, the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has since said that her department have no plans to reintroduce wolves into the country, saying that the “large predator” doing so would do damage to farming.
