End-date for Robert Mueller’s Trump investigation revealed, but there’s a catch

And it seems like just yesterday that Donald Trump was firing James Comey…

Reports have emerged that special counsel Robert Mueller has told Donald Trump’s legal team that his investigation into whether President Donald Trump obstructed the Russia inquiry will be finished by September 1, 2018.

Former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani, who recently joined Trump’s legal team, has said that Mueller’s people have revealed their intentions to finish this leg of the investigation before the 2018 mid-term elections.

According to the New York Times, the obstruction element of Mueller’s inquiry could be wrapped up within the next few months — but the date was contingent on Trump agreeing to be interviewed by Mueller. If Trump were to lie during this meeting, he could face criminal charges.

It is worth noting, however, that this will not bring an end to the entire probe — and that the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia would continue.

Mueller, a former Director of the FBI, has been leading the investigation since May 2017. The most high-profile arrest to have emerged from the investigation is that of Paul Manafort, who served as Donald Trump’s campaign chairman for several months in 2016.

The special counsel’s office began to investigate Trump for obstruction of justice as former FBI Director James Comey made claims that Trump had pressured him to stop investigating Mike Flynn, his former national security advisor. Flynn has since pled guilty to a single felony count of “wilfully and knowingly” making “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to the FBI.

The New York Times further specified that the special counsel’s office has not commented on Giuliani’s claim.
