“Clearly Fine Gael’s intention is to engage in shadow boxing in the coming weeks and we’ve no intention in participating in such a charade.”

The Social Democrats have accused Fine Gael of “shadow boxing” and engaging in “theatrics” after cancelling a proposed meeting between the two parties on Tuesday.

The Social Democrats confirmed that a proposed meeting between the two parties had been cancelled in a statement on Tuesday morning which outlined the party’s dim view of remarks made by Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar the previous evening.

On Monday, Fine Gael confirmed its intention to go into opposition following a meeting of the parliamentary party about the formation of the 33rd Dáil.

A statement issued following the meeting read: “Sinn Féin has an obligation to the people who voted for it to show whether or not it can honour the extraordinary promises they made.”

“An Taoiseach and Fine Gael President, Leo Varadkar, told the parliamentary party that he relishes the challenge to lead a strong and effective opposition for the benefit of the country,” it added.

“In particular, Fine Gael will represent the interests and aspirations of the 450,000 people who voted for the party in the election and hold the new government to account.”

In response, a Social Democrats statement on Tuesday morning read: “In light of Leo Varadakar’s statement yesterday evening, the Social Democrats have taken the decision to cancel today’s proposed meeting with Fine Gael.

“It is clear to all that Fine Gael are now engaged in a game-playing exercise and we refuse to participate in what is essentially theatrics by Fine Gael.

“While it was always the case that we were unlikely to find much common ground with Fine Gael, we intended to honour our commitment of engaging openly with all parties.

“Clearly Fine Gael’s intention is to engage in shadow boxing in the coming weeks and we’ve no intention in engaging in participating in such a charade.”
