The date is timed so that he is back in the United States for the annual commemoration of the 11 September terrorist attacks, and in Doonbeg in time for the end of the Irish Open on 13 September. A significant security presence is anticipated given the likelihood of protests.

The prospect was discussed by Mr Trump and the Taoiseach during the St Patrick's Day visit to the White House in March. All US presidents in recent decades have visited Ireland while in office, with former president Joe Biden the last to do so, in April 2023.
