Verona Murphy, who is standing as a Fine Gael candidate in the Wexford by-election on Friday (29 November), has released a campaign video which describes recent media coverage of her as a ‘character assassination’.

Murphy has been in the headlines recently over comments falsely linking Ireland’s migrant population to ISIS. She has subsequently apologised for the comments and has since received backing for her election campaign from a number of Government ministers, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

On Thursday, on the eve of the by-election, Murphy released a campaign video on her Facebook page which labels some of the recent media coverage of her as a ‘character assassination’.

Set to the famous motivational song ‘The Eye of the Tiger’, the video features a number of messages of support for Murphy from people in Wexford as well as a slogan that reads ‘#fightback’, ending with a reminder to constituents to vote number 1 for Murphy on 29 November.

The video can be seen in full on Murphy’s Facebook page here.

Leo Varadkar has said he expects Murphy to come out on top of the poll in Wexford; the count to determine the results of the by-election will get underway on Saturday.
