A former England boss fancies the Chelsea job… and it’s not Sven

Liverpool’s managerial vacancy has gotten all the headlines but Chelsea are on the lookout for a new boss too and Fabio Capello has made it known he fancies a crack at it.

Whatever sympathy you may feel for Kenny Dalglish, spare a thought for Roberto Di Matteo. He has piloted Chelsea to an FA Cup and a Champions League final. Just 36 hours from now he could be the first Chelsea boss to lift a European Cup, something even the Special One couldn’t pull off.

But his days at Chelsea are reported to be numbered, regardless of what he does in Munich on Saturday night, with Roman Abramovich reportedly on the lookout for a new man who isn’t RDM.

And a bit like how his England predecessor Sven Goran-Eriksson used to pop up whenever a big job would appear, Fabio Capello has made it clear that he quite fancies managing John Terry again.

It is widely reported in the English press today that the 65-year-old Italian has ‘put himself forward’ for the job at Stamford Bridge. Capello is not thinking of retirement and while he is reported to have turned down jobs in Russia and Spain, the former Juve boss reckons his best route back is in the Premier League.

Capello was quoted in The Times last month, hinting that despite the bad time he had as England boss, he fancied a crack at English football.

“England would be very interesting for me because I know very well the teams and the players and everything would be less difficult. I’ve refused some really good offers for a lot of money, from clubs in China and different places in the world. I want one more challenge.

“At the end of my career it would be interesting to find a team with big motivation to arrive at the top. I want to manage a team that is able to play in the Champions League and fight for lots of trophies. If I don’t find the kind of club I want I’ll return to being a pundit.”

Abramovich may want to try and lure Pep Guardiola back into action, or even take Jose Mourinho back, but Capello appears to have put himself at the top of the queue for now.

Anyway, there’s always the Aston Villa job Fabio, if you are stuck…
