Exhilarating thriller with an incredible cast is among the movies on TV tonight

It also has a legendary director.

The weather has let us down after a lovely dry week, which means it's the perfect evening for chilling on the couch with some great movies on TV.

Fortunately, the movie gods have come through and there are some excellent choices on tonight.

Our pick of the bunch is an exhilarating thriller with an incredible cast - Space Cowboys.

Directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, the flick stars Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner as four ageing former test pilots who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite.

Upon its release in 2000, Space Cowboys was a big success at the box office and got some great reviews, maintaining that to this day, with a score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the story structure is very traditional and is said to lean into some clichés, the strength of the leading cast (particularly Jones and Eastwood) makes Space Cowboys a great watch and a surprisingly poignant insight into old age.

Cowboys and Aliens - Film Four - 6.30pm
From Space Cowboys to Cowboys vs Aliens. This 2011 sci-fi pits a bunch of cowboys against an alien invasion and stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde.

12 Strong - Film Four - 9pm
2018 action flick based on Doug Stanton's non-fiction book Horse Soldiers, which tells the story of U.S. Army Special Forces sent to Afghanistan immediately after the September 11 attacks.

The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon and Michael Peña and has received some mixed reviews. If you're a fan of war films though, you'll probably dig it.

Nomadland - TG4 - 9.30pm
Once of the best films of 2020 and winner of Best Picture and Best Director, stars Francis McDormand (who also won Best Actress) as a widow who leaves her life in Nevada to travel around the United States in her van as a nomad.

Critically lauded, Nomadland is absolutely worth a watch if you haven't seen it before.

Black 47 - Film Four - 1.50am
One of the most powerful Irish films of the last decade follows an Irish Catholic soldier who has been fighting for the British Army abroad, as he deserts his regiment to reunite with his family.

Set in Connemara during the Irish famine, Black 47 received praise for its description of the historical event, as well as its use of the Irish language.

Hugo Weaving, James Frecheville, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea, Freddie Fox, Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford, and Sarah Greene all star.
