Netflix has just added I.S.S., a tense 2024 sci-fi thriller movie starring Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story).
The film takes place on the International Space Station, which is populated by two groups: one of American astronauts and the other of Russian cosmonauts.

Though the two groups get along well, a war on Earth between their respective countries plunges the station into madness.
This is because both groups of space people get the same message: seize the I.S.S. "by any means necessary".
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish), the cast of the sci-fi thriller is led by DeBose, along with Chris Messina (Air), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Masha Mashkova (For All Mankind) and Costa Ronin (Homeland).
I.S.S. boasts an undeniably great premise, with a microcosm of a Russia/US war playing out amongst the delicate, claustrophobic confines of a space station.
While the resulting film doesn't quite live up to that premise - feeling quite formulaic in parts - its tense thrills and tight running time of about 90 minutes make it worth seeking out for fans of sci-fi or B-movies.
You can read some positive reviews for I.S.S. below:
Mark Kermode: "It doesn't come up with much more than its central theme, but it's an enjoyable B-movie in that it's a simple set-up, it's convincingly played and directed with enough panache."
RogerEbert.com: "It is an efficient thrill ride, running about 90 minutes, with every moment used as effectively as possible."
San Jose Mercury News: "The sharp-edged premise makes its bloody point well while the cast, headed by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina, make us care about what happens in space and on the ground."
Tribune News Service: "It’s a surprisingly trenchant story for what seems to be a slight genre thriller, but then again, genre thrillers can be the best vessels for these kinds of messages."
USA Today: "With I.S.S., [DeBose] takes a giant leap forward as a solid action hero amid a decently gripping mix of human nature and atomic annihilation."
I.S.S. is streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK now.
