Dana White confirms that McGregor will not be lightweight champion after UFC 223

Well, that’s that.

In a live streaming event on Friday night, Dana White made the following blunt statement:

“I have no update. The winner of this fight will be the champion.”

This was in reference to McGregor no longer holding the Lightweight Championship Title, and that the fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 will be for the title.

It was also mentioned by Ferguson that he was offered a chance to fight McGregor, but Conor turned the fight down.

White stated that McGregor had alluded to returning to the ring in September, but that would result in the lightweight division being held up for almost two years without the champion, to which White said “It’s not fair on the rest of the division.”

McGregor was previously stripped of his featherweight belt for not defending it, and following on from UFC 223, he may well become the first UFC fighter to be stripped of two different titles.
