Very sad news.

Former England manager Graham Taylor has passed away aged 72 of a suspected heart attack.

A family statement released on Thursday morning read: “With the greatest sadness, we have to announce that Graham passed away at his home early this morning of a suspected heart attack.

“The family are devastated by this sudden and totally unexpected loss.”

A statement from the Football League, meanwhile, read: “We are extremely saddened to hear Graham Taylor has passed away. A genuine legend of the game. Our thoughts are with his family.”

After spells in charge of Lincoln City, Watford and Aston Villa, Taylor succeeded Bobby Robson as England manager in 1990 and remained in charge until his resignation in November 1993 following England’s failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

Taylor returned to club management with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1994 and had a second spell with both Watford and Aston Villa before leaving the Villains in 2003.

After his career in management came to an end, Taylor remained in football as a pundit with BBC Radio Five Live and was named honorary life president of Watford football club.

He’ll be sorely missed.
