French government bans alcohol near Euro 2016 venues

Conor Heneghan

The French government has banned alcohol near Euro 2016 venues as a result of the violence that took place in Marseille and other host cities over the weekend.

The decision by the French government comes in the wake of a statement issued by the UEFA Executive Committee on Sunday afternoon threatening England and Russia with disqualification from the tournament following scenes of violence involving their supporters on Saturday.

The precise details of the French government ban have not yet been revealed, but one of the host cities, Lens, already has a 24-hour alcohol ban in place for every match played in the city, including the meeting of England and Wales on 21 June.
