While we are all caught up in the excitement over Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane, it’s World Cup play-off week for a few lucky countries.
The European teams face off in their first legs on Friday, but the intercontinental South American/Asian play-off first leg between Jordan and Uruguay took place today and it was pretty much one-way traffic.
The visitors to Amman took the lead after 22 minutes through Maxi Pereira and while Luis Suarez was kept off the scoresheet, team-mates Stauni, Lodeiro, Cristian Rodriguez and Edinson Cavani did score and it was the fifth and final goal, by the PSG man, that was the highlight of the game.
A late free kick was conceded by a dejected Jordanian side and Cavani stepped up to drive home a dipping, curling peach of a goal from 20 yards plus.
It was a bit cruel on Jordan, whose player looked inconsolable at the final whistle. Bet they are dreading the trip to Uruguay for the second leg.
