Mayo recovered their poise after a poor opening period that was dominated by Dublin, with John Small lucky to have avoided a black card for cynically pulling down Andy Moran. It was a far more open and entertaining affair than the first game, with Mayo hoping to win their first title in 65 years and Lee Keegan ruthless finish saw a jubilant response from the red and green members of the Croke Park stands. Dublin's misery was compounded shortly afterwards when Jonny Cooper was black-carded, Davy Byrne his replacement.
