The defeat that Jake Paul suffered against Anthony Joshua in December was a heavy one, and now he is set for a period out of the ring as he is medically suspended.
The American suffered his second loss in his professional career of 14 matches in Miami last year.
The fight was stopped following Joshua’s powerful right-hand on Paul’s chin in round six, and the latter then confirmed he that he had suffered a double jaw break.
He also had some teeth removed and titanium plates fitted, while he said that he was struggling to sleep and could only consume liquids.
“I got four plates in my jaw, but that’s part of the sport. The healing process has been a little bit tough”, he told DAZN in a recent update.
“The healing process has been a little bit tough. I’m a little bit tired, it’s hard to sleep, I go onto the pillow, and then my jaw twerks up to the left, and I wake up so. It’s all part of the sport, and it was an amazing night, and I learned a lot, gained a lot of experience, and we’re moving onto more fights this year.”
‘The Problem Child’ dropped out of the WBA’s cruiserweight rankings following the loss, and has now been dealt more bad news just over two weeks after the bout.
The Florida Athletic Commission confirmed on Sunday that Paul headed a list of fighters who have received medical suspensions following the December 19 card, as reported by MMA Fighting.
While 30-day suspensions are used when a fighter loses by “technical knockout, technical draw, or disqualification, shall be automatically suspended for a period of time to be determined by the physician or commission representative, or 30 calendar days after the date of the technical knockout, technical draw, or disqualification, whichever is longer”.
It is not clear when Paul, 28, will be cleared to return to action.

This is standard procedure and a “participant losing by knockout as a result of being counted out in any jurisdiction shall be automatically suspended for a period of time as determined by the attending physician or commission representative, or 60 calendar days after the date of the knockout, whichever is longer. A participant shall not engage in any match, contact exhibition, or contact sparring for training purposes during the suspension period”, as per the commission’s regulations.
Just days after his win against Paul, Joshua was involved in a fatal car accident where two of his friends tragically died, and Paul posted a message on social media, stating that his “thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends and AJ.”
