France vs. Ireland: What is at stake in the Euro 2024 qualifier?

Ireland face a daunting task in Paris on Thursday night. Stephen Kenny’s side take on one of the most talented teams in the sport, the 2018 world champions, who lost the 2022 World Cup final on penalties.

France have tasted defeat in just one of their last 24 European Championship qualification games – a 2-0 loss away to Turkey in 2019.

Les Bleus have not lost a competitive match at home since March 2013, when they lost 1-0 to then-world champions Spain.

France, who lead the group with 12 points from four games, are on course to reach Euro 2024.

Kenny’s side are currently third in Group B, with three points from three games. Ireland have only beaten minnows Gibraltar so far and lost to Greece in June and France in the reverse fixture in March.

Ireland, however, could be out of contention to reach the tournament directly if they suffer defeat in Paris on Thursday night and loss to the Netherlands in Dublin on Sunday.

The Ireland manager could come under increased pressure if they fail to register a point against the top seeds in the group.
