Katie Taylor promises to bounce back after her surprise defeat

Paul Moore

Fighting words.

Katie Taylor has promised to bounce back following her surprise defeat to Yana Alekseevna of Azerbaijan in the semi-final of an Olympic qualifying tournament in Turkey.

The defeat was Taylor’s first one in five five years, the Bray boxer lost a highly controversial bout against Denista Eliseeva in Bulgaria in 2011.

The defeat puts Taylor’s place at the Rio Olympics in jeopardy, the 2012 gold medalist has not yet secured her place at this year’s Olympics, although the five-time world champion can still do so by reaching the semi-finals of the World Championships in Astana later this year.

Alekseevna won the fight this afternoon by a unanimous decision (39-37 on the cards of all three judges), ending Taylor’s run of 62 consecutive victories but she has promised to return to her impeccable standards.

We don’t doubt her.
