The mighty Madrid Masters will be amongst a number of international basketball teams participating in the 3rd Galway Masters International Basketball Tournament in NUIG this weekend.

Players from the Spanish side will be amongst a host of veteran basketball stars on show this weekend in Galway at the 3rd Galway Masters International Basketball Tournament, which is being hosted at NUIG Kingfisher in association with Fáilte Ireland.

The two-day tournament has turned in to an annual event since its inauguration in 2011 and this year, 22 Men’s and Women’s teams from Spain, Italy, Scotland Northern Ireland, England, Ireland and the US will compete to raise funds for worthy causes.

The event has been a huge success in recent years with this year promising to be even bigger and better than before with the attraction of a Masters Team from Madrid.

Eight members of the team played for Real Madrid up to U19 level and won a Spanish championship in 1991. The team also includes two Irish players; Paul Herrick from Galway and Niall Healy from Dublin. Similar to their football equivalent, Real Madrid are one of the most successful basketball teams both in Spain and in Europe.

The much anticipated two-day event will begin at 9am on Saturday November 2nd and will be held at the NUIG Kingfisher Sports Centre in Galway City. The day will climax with a presentation dinner to take place in The Galway Bay Hotel at 7.30pm.

The Beneficiary of this year’s Galway Masters Tournament will be Wheelchair Basketball in Galway and all proceeds will go towards customised sports wheelchairs.

A wheelchair challenge game between the Galway Wheelers and a Masters Selection will also be played on Saturday at 4pm in NUIG as part of the tournament.
