Meg Ryan, teen advice and Blur: JOE spins the Tombola of Truth with Gaizka Mendieta

"Just work hard and never give up"

Joe Harrington

“I am a terrible singer so it doesn’t matter because I’d ruin anything.”

Next up on the JOE Tombola of Truth is former Spain, Valencia, Barcelona and Middlesborough star Gaizka Mendieta.

The JOE team has come up with 50 questions which are conveniently numbered 1-50. Impressive, we know.

These are random questions about life, sport, music, movies, craic and the rest of it. Anything goes.

We give the interviewee various different attempts at spinning the JOE Tombola of Truth and, depending on which number is pulled out, we ask the corresponding question.

Let the spin begin.

JOE: What advice would you give your adolescent self?

Gaizka: I was lucky that my dad gave me great advice when I was young – you have to keep your studies up. I’ve seen guys get injured and have nothing to fall back on, it’s terrible.

Then just work hard and never give up, people who follow those should be OK.

JOE: What person, dead or alive, would you like to go for a pint with?

Gaizka: I’ve been lucky enough to have met a lot of my footballing heroes but as a music fan, Lou Reed. I’ve always been fascinated with his life and his career so I’d like to sit down and talk to him for a few hours.

JOE: If you could invent one flavour of ice cream, what would it be?

Gaizka: I’m a big fan of sweet stuff so a combination of chocolate, caramel and vanilla would be tasty.

JOE: How do you take your tea?

Gaizka: No sugar and a drop of milk.

JOE: Messi or Ronaldo?

Gaizka: Well, we’re lucky to be witnessing two of the greatest players in the history of the game. Messi, in terms of football talent, is gifted.

He can create and make anything happen on the pitch where Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer. Messi for me.

JOE: Have you ever spent a night in jail?

Gaizka: No. I’ve never been in trouble that badly.

JOE: What is your favourite movie off all time?

Gaizka: I love the Hitchcock movies. The Birds is probably my favourite, I’ve seen it so many times. It’s amazing the way he could create tension and atmosphere with so little, big fan.

JOE: Who was your first crush?

Gaizka: Meg Ryan.

MEGRRYAN

JOE: Cats or dogs?

Gaizka: I love all animals to be honest, but I’m more of a dog person. Cats are too independent while dogs are better company. Dogs definitely.

JOE: What’s your favourite holiday destination?

Gaizka: California. You can surf, ski, head into the mountains and do pretty much anything there. (JOE: Take us with you Gaizka!)

JOE: What’s your karaoke song of choice?

Gaizka: I am a terrible singer so it doesn’t matter because I’d ruin anything. I’ll go with Sweet Home Alabama though.

JOE: Blur or Oasis?

Gaizka: Blur.

JOE: What is the capital of Venezuela?

Gaizka: Is it… Caracas? (JOE: Yes!)

JOE: Who, in your opinion, is the most famous Irish person?

Gaizka: At the moment, Robbie Keane I guess.

JOE: Who is the most famous person called Joe that you’ve met or know?

Gaizka: The Bayern Munich manager Josep Guardiola, we played on the national team for years.
