Now this is a bet; a 20-match GAA club accumulator lands at 112/1

Betting on GAA club matches is a fierce tricky business. Well it us unless you are DIT student Brian Moore.

We’ve all tried to pick up a handy few quid doing GAA club match accumulators. Tempted in by such heavy weights as Portlaoise, Dr Crokes, Crossmaglen etc it looks bloody easy. But all it takes is for you to pick one favourite who slips up, and your bet is gone. Plus, with such short odds, you need to stack up loads of them to make the odds decent, increasing your chances of hitting a dud along the way.

But in a feat of GAA punting not seen since the powers that be bet on Jones’ Road as a fine spot to set up camp, DIT student Brian Moore hit the jackpot yesterday.

Brian threw the last €8 he had in his Paddy Power account on a 20-match accumulator involving games in virtually every corner of the country. Brian wasn’t too wild, sticking to favourites in every game, and all of them were odds on too, but how often does backing that many short-priced favourites come off?

Brian’s largest odds punt was Austin Stacks at 1/2 against Feale Rangers in the Kerry championship. In the end, they won 3-12 to 0-3, so that hardly kept him awake.

All his favourites, from Ballinderry in Derry to Ferns in Wexford, did the business and he was left waiting on the Sligo football final between Tourlestrane and Tubbercurry and Corofin against Salthill/Knocknacarra in Galway. Favourites Tourlestrane and Corofin duly won and for his €8 investment at odds of 112.5/1 Brian landed a very tasty €904.58 in his account.

And yes, we did ask Brian for a tip and he advised us to back Corofin for the All-Ireland Club Football title. They’re 5/1 now…
