This guy could be the oldest GAA player in the country…

GAA experts have been saying for a while now that the sport is becoming a young person’s game as the average age of teams seems to be falling all the time. However, there is an exception to that and it comes in the shape of Roscommon club Strokestown.

The team were playing St Joseph’s in a recent Tansey Cup game and in the second half Strokestown looked for some fresh legs, so they sprung 67-year-old Martin Silke from the bench.

Martin, who is the club chairman, slotted in at corner-forward and Strokestown went on to win by 2-16 to 3-8, which led to Martin getting a mention in a local newspaper…

Fair play to Martin and Strokestown, we’re sure he’s teaching the young lads in the club a thing or two. What a legend!
