PIC: Fr Dougal minding the corner flag happened in real life at Cork City’s game tonight

One of the funniest Father Ted episodes is Escape to Victory which is the one with the over 75s soccer match.

One of the funniest parts of that episodes is when Dougal has to “mind the corner flag” in case the Rugged Island team steal it.

You’d think something as stupid and hilarious as that could only be in a fictional comedy but it pretty much happened at Turner’s Cross tonight.

The corner flag broke after it was knocked following a collision between a Cork City and a Derry City player. The ground staff tried to put it back up, but failed.

Enter the Cork City kit man Fr Dougal Mick Ring.

Kitman 3 Kitman

Mick had to “mind the corner flag” for around 15 minutes while a replacement was being sourced. A proper clubman.

We can confirm that none of the Derry City staff touched the flag in that time.
