This is a lovely gesture.
Ireland’s evening kick-off against the USA will mark the end of John O’Shea’s glittering international career.
But the FAI confirmed on Twitter yesterday that O’Shea’s career isn’t the only thing that will be celebrated at the Aviva Stadium.
Ireland’s players will sport jerseys with rainbow numbers on their back, in support of LGBT+ Pride Month. The FAI revealed a photo of what the numbering will look like alongside a tweet which read “The back of tomorrow’s match kit. Not just a number, this is a statement. Ireland, supporting #LGBT rights. #EqualGame #COYBIG #COYGIG #IRLUSA.”

Ireland lost their last friendly 2-0 against France last week, but will hope for a better outcome against the USA — who also failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup.
