VIDEO: An extremely rare ‘own point’ was scored in a championship game in Cavan yesterday

A fine point it was too

Straight over the black spot.

Own goals are a rare enough occurrence in Gaelic Football, but even renowned own-goal expert Richard Dunne would have his work cut out trying to score an own point; a player putting the ball over his or her own bar is something that simply doesn’t happen.

Or at least it didn’t happen until a Cavan club championship encounter between Ramor United and Castlerahan yesterday, when the highly unfortunate Ramor defender Stefan Connolly kicked the ball between his own posts while trying to dispossess Castlerahan’s Oisin O’Connell.

As if poor Connolly wasn’t unlucky enough to score a point for the opposition, he was even unluckier still that the folks at We Are Cavan were on hand to record it for posterity.

Ramor lost by nine points in the end so it didn’t make a huge difference in any case, but we’ve a feeling that poor Stefan won’t hear the end of this one for many years to come.
