The stakes couldn’t have been higher for last night’s Premier League encounter between Blackburn and Wigan, with one side relegated and the other safe for another year after 90 minutes.

Due to an 87th minute header from Antolin Alcaraz, Steve Kean’s men were relegated to the Championship in a 1-0 defeat at their Ewood Park home, yet fans made their disgust known in a unique way.

Intended as a protest to the regime of Indian poultry giants Venky’s, a Blackburn cape-clad chicken was released onto the pitch and halted play, quickly becoming a Twitter sensation in the process.

Having been caught on-field by Latics goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, the brave and bewildered bird been honoured with three separate Twitter accounts – @EwoodChick, @BlackburnChick9 and @BRFCChicken.

Despite his humiliation as Blackburn boss now extending to chicken protests and rel-egg-ation (sorry…), a beleaguered Steve Kean said after last night’s game that he has no plans to leave his post.

“I will sit down with the owners and discuss a plan on how to assemble a squad to help us bounce back up straight away,” said Kean.

I have spoken with the owners, like I do every day. We haven’t mentioned what has happened tonight but I am confident we will have a sit-down and have a plan in place as quickly as possible. I do believe I’ll be here next season.”
