Video: Brilliant Mayo version of Bastille’s Pompeii raises the bar for All-Ireland songs yet again

Hats off to Quality Street, this is, well, quality.

JOE

Hats off to Quality Street, this is, well, quality.

One of the catchiest songs of recent years, Bastille’s Pompeii was always ripe for a sporting rip off. With a refrain that is built for terrace chanting, the folks in Quality Street have spotted that it fits ‘Mayo’ perfectly, and a great All-Ireland song was born.

We also have to say that the line ‘And Donegal came tumbling down in the city of the Dubs’ is close to bloody genius.

Add in a frequent mentions of that most special of years to Mayo folk, 1951, and we have another classic. We surely have enough good Mayo songs now for an album.

As for Dublin, well, let’s just say we are very disappointed in you so far…

Thanks to Gerry Heneghan from the band for sending it our way too.
