Video: ICYMI: Jim White struggles through a report of Mayo’s victory over New York on Sky Sports
Granted, it’s not Transfer Deadline Day or anything but he could have made a better effort than this.
Ever since it was announced earlier this year that Sky would be covering GAA this season, there has been great anticipation about the standard of coverage of our native games we can expect from the biggest sports broadcaster on this side of the world.
We got a taste of things to come on Sky Sports yesterday when Jim White – the man who has become bigger than Transfer Deadline day itself – delivered a brief report on Mayo’s comprehensive victory over New York at Gaelic Park on Sunday and let’s just say Jim has a bit of work to do on the pronunciation side of things.
We’d nearly forgive his attempts at saying Connacht because even today there are two accepted spellings of the province (Connaught being the other one, of course), but he should really have done better when it came to pronouncing the name of Cillian O’Connor, a man who has already won two Young Footballer of the Year awards and appeared in two All-Ireland Finals in his brief inter-county career to date.
There will, admittedly, be bigger games ahead than a match that you’d barely know marked the start of the 2014 Gaelic Football Championship, but if they want to win over the sceptics, Jim and Sky are going to have to do a bit better than this from now on…
