The Tour de France is arguably the toughest sporting event in the world but the superb Peter Sagan made it looks very easy yesterday.
Yesterday’s seventh stage was the toughest of the Tour de France so far, with the mountain top finish, and the power of Team Sky, blowing the race apart.
From an Irish point of view Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin did us proud, hanging tough until almost the very end, and the more experienced Roche began today in eighth on General Classification.
However, the star of this year’s Tour so far is Liquigas rider Peter Sagan. The young Slovakian has won three stages already on this Tour and it’s his first attempt at the world’s toughest bike race.
Yesterday’s stage was not one for the Slovakian, and he trailed in over 120 places behind the winner Chris Froome. But despite the fact he had spent over five hours in the saddle, Sagan decided to pull a trick for the fans 300metres from the end.
We are used to this sort of stuff in MotoGP but to see it at the end of a brutally tough stage of the Tour de France is something else. And he didn’t even use his hands. A new cycling star is born.
