Video: We’ve a lump in our throat watching Australian captain Michael Clarke’s tribute to the late Phillip Hughes

Well done Michael Clarke, this can’t have been easy.

Well done Michael Clarke, this can’t have been easy.

The reaction to the tragic death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes this week has been incredibly overwhelming and it’s hard not to be touched by the tributes that have been flowing in his direction in the last few days.

The #putyourbatsout campaign on Twitter was an example of social media at its finest and it was lovely to see Croke Park get in on the act with a lovely tribute outside GAA HQ yesterday.

While Hughes’ death has impacted worldwide it’s obviously in Australia where it has been felt the most and having already issued a statement on behalf of Hughes’ family earlier in the week, Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke delivered the most heartfelt and emotional tribute to Hughes’ memory on behalf of the team.

Clarke spoke of how just how much it meant to Hughes to play for Australia, how the dressing room will never be the same without him and of the intention to retire the number 64 jersey he wore during one-day internationals as a tribute to his memory.

Incredibly tough to watch, but incredibly powerful all the same.

Rest in peace Phillip.
