WATCH: Liverpool fans sing Virgil van Djik chant to the tune of a classic trad anthem

James Dawson

Still pretty catchy.

Footage has emerged showing Liverpool fans singing a chant that is very close to Irish people.

A re-working of  the classic ‘Dirty Old Town’, the new chant celebrates the Merseysiders’ centre-half Virgil van Djik.

Originally written by British folk singer, songwriter, and labour activist Ewan MacColl, the song was made popular by The Dubliners and covered by The Pogues, Rod Stewart, Simple Minds, U2, and many more.

The lyrics go: “He’s a centre-half, he’s a number four.

“Watch him defend, and we watch him score,

“He’ll pass the ball, calm as you like,

“He’s Virgil van Dijk, he’s Virgil van Dijk.”

The footage first appeared from an event in Paris when Liverpool travelled to play PSG in the Champions League, however, the video has since been uploaded by The Liverpool Corner Facebook page. It has received over 170,000 views at the time of writing.
