WATCH: The superb moment these Irish horse owners realise they’ve won big at the Melbourne Cup

Paul Moore

We could watch this all day.

On the track, Almandin has won the Melbourne Cup, narrowly taking the victory from the Irish trained Heartbreak City in Australia’s biggest race.

Almandin, ridden by Australian Kerrin McEvoy, took the spoils and it’s the second time that McEvoy has tasted Melbourne Cup success, after first winning with Brew in 2000.

The race is Australia’s richest one, as a plethora of the world’s finest horse racing talent all competed for the A$3.6m (£2.25m; €2.50m) prize.

Second prize isn’t to be scoffed at though because A$900k is a fair chunk of change, and we’re delighted to say that this exact amount is currently resting in the accounts of a few Irishmen after Meath based trainer Tony Martin helped to guide Heartbreak City, a 7yo bay gelding (male) from France, to a second placed second.

Take a look at the action below, but these scenes on the track pale in comparison to what happens next as the horse’s owners, New York publican Aidan Shiels and his fellow Irishmen Niall Reilly and Charlie Gavigan, give one of the best interviews that you’ll ever see.

We absolutely love their passion for horse racing. There’s no heartbreak here, just magic.

Take a look.
