Fan riots are normally the preserve of football supporters, but Vancouver Canucks fans put them to shame following their Stanley Cup final defeat last night.
Furious Canucks fans took to the streets of their hometown following their 4-0 defeat to Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the finals and proceeded to smash windows, loot shops, fire beer bottles at giant TV screens and overturn cars in a display of anger not in keeping with the stereotype of mild mannered and polite Canadians.
Police were forced to use non-lethal stun grenades, pepper spray and tear gas – the first time it has been used following a similar Canucks related riot in 1994 – but struggled to contain the angry crowds.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson described the violence as "embarrassing and shameful".
"The vast majority of people who were in the downtown tonight were there to enjoy the game in a peaceful and respectful manner," he said.
"It is unfortunate that a small number of people intent on criminal activity have turned pockets of the downtown into areas involving destruction of property and confrontations with police."
Oh, Canada. Where did it all go wrong, eh?
