It’s a game called Baby Monkey (going backwards on a pig) – do we really have to convince you that it’s amazing?
Based on a real-life baby monkey named Miwa and a boar named Uribo from the Fukuchiyama City Zoo, Baby Monkey (going backwards on a pig) became a ridiculously catchy YouTube hit of the same name from singer-songwriter Parry Gripp last year. Now, it has somehow spawned its own app.
In fact, as of this writing, the clip has received 9.3m views, so perhaps ‘somehow’ is being a little cruel. However, in the lyrics of the aforementioned song, the sheer existence of this release proves that “the world has gone insane”. We reckon that a world with pig-riding baby monkeys is very much a world we want to be a part of, though.
Greatest screenshot ever?
Much like the greatest video game duos – Banjo and Kazooie, Mario and Luigi – both monkey and pig work together as a team, and each have a dedicated button on the left and right of the screen. Tap the monkey button and your simian will leap high to collect bananas, while the pig’s button is get past enemies that include various obstacles and ahem, ‘Nom Nom Hamsters’. Oh my.
If you’ve ever played Canabalt, you’ll be in familiar territory. There, you controlled an unnamed character who automatically ran forwards and you had to guide him through the game unscatched. The gameplay is much the same here, though with a little more depth. For example, in Baby Monkey you can collect bananas, which gain you points and multiply when collected consecutively.
As you can imagine, tapping the monkey button is the best way to reach those bananas, while you’ll need to control the swine underneath to vault across pits and obstacles on the ground. Holding the button also gives you a slight advantage as it slows your descent.
Evidenced from the above screenshot, the game has a wonderful art style, while we’re still not sick of the titular song which plays through every level. In all, Baby Monkey is an exceedingly charming title that’s a lot better than you’d expect, even bettering Canabalt in many regards. And yet, we’d still have bought it just for the name alone.
