Electric Ireland warn their customers about this online email scam

Tony Cuddihy

Don’t fall for it.

Electric Ireland are warning customers to be vigilant in dealing with any emails they get from the energy company.

High quality phishing emails are doing the rounds, many coming from an account called ‘[email protected]’.

Remember this above all else – do not fill in any of your personal details. If you do, change your password immediately.

They make references to electric bills, claim that you could be owed money back and link to a website that closely mimics the Electric Ireland site.

A spokesman from Electric Ireland told the Independent: “This is an ongoing thing over the last number of months.

“It is incredible how sophisticated that latest mail is. These are not just rudimentary scams anymore.

“These emails have nothing to do with Electric Ireland. The instructions on these emails vary, often seeking a response, they may provide a link or attachment and request personal data.

“Please ensure you do not enter any of your details. If you have entered your Electric Ireland online username and password, we urge you to reset your password immediately.”
